German Apple Cake

This German Apple Cake is a moist, dense and very flavorful cake that keeps well. It has been a family favorite since I first made it, years ago. It asks for simple ingredients like cinnamon and apples, but the result is a wonderful cake, crusty sweet top and moist mellow inside. It is fantastic!!!

Makes 12 servings

IngredientsGerman Apple Cake

2-1/4 cups all purpose flour

2 eggs, large

1/2 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup white sugar

1/4 tsp salt

2 tsp baking soda

2 tsp ground cinnamon

1/2 cup butter, melted

1 cup sour milk (1 tbsp white wine vinegar + 1 cup milk)

3 cups apples (Granny Smith, Jonagold), peeled and sliced thinly

Topping

1/4 brown sugar

1/4 white sugar

1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

1 cup chopped nuts 

Directions

1. Preheat the oven to 350 F.

2. In a bowl, combine flour, eggs, brown sugar, white sugar, salt, baking soda, cinnamon, butter and sour milk. Mix until well blended.

3. Fold in apples. Pour the batter into a greased 12 by 9 inch cake pan.

4. To prepare the topping, combine all ingredients and mix to blend. Sprinkle over the cake batter.

Bake the cake for 45 min. Cool completely and serve.
