shoppingTips for eating healthy on a budget

In these hard economic times, we are all looking for different ways to save money. This is particularly true with our food budget. It is hard to stay on a budget and stay healthy. We all know that a healthy diet can help us to keep our medical costs down, but how do we justify the added expense of healthy foods? Try these simple tips:

Stay away from pre-packaged, frozen or processed foods.  These are more expensive and usually higher in sodium, calories and fat. Try and cook your meals from scratch. Home cooking is not only healthier, it’s also cheaper.

Plan ahead by making up a weekly menu and a shopping list. When you have a list of products, you tend to buy the essentials.  Look at the store flyers before making up your list to include items on sale.

Buy family size items when possible and then store into smaller portions at home. Most meats and poultry will last for up to 4 months in your freezer, eggs up to 5 weeks in the fridge. Dried grains, beans, pasta and rice will normally last a year. For more check storage tips

The meat is the most expensive part of the grocery list; therefore, plan for at least one meatless meal each week. This is a great excuse to mix in your dish beans, vegetables, or grains-much healthier source of healthy nutrients.

Use your leftovers, try to improvise. If you had roasted chicken for dinner, use the leftovers the next day for dinner. You can make delicious chicken salad or chicken sandwiches.
